Blake Cedric -- DJ Trans Fat (MRS.) -- will be showing a decade's worth of art in "Daddy Issues," opening Thursday at Gallerie Salome. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing Cedric's work, so I'll leave it to Katey Pants (DJ ROY G BIV) to tell you all about it:
Shopping, sentimentality, sex, sloppiness, and stoner-living - all are in a days work for Blake Cedric. And all of these parts will be featured in his upcoming exhibition: Daddy Issues at Galerie Salome. Cedric, a longtime queer artist and entertainer in Portland has nearly reached institution status in queer nightlife. During the month of April- Cedric will feature a series of new paintings of a cerebral and kitchy nature along with an archive of his collection spanning a decade. But don’t mistake Cedric's tapping into the mainstream, the tacky, the low, and the kitsch as ironic. The lack of irony is precisely what makes it get into your brain and tap into a rich DIY queer culture that is often left out of the mainstream gay male gaze.
The opening reception starts at 7 p.m. April 5 at Gallerie Salome (625 NW Everett St. #101) and includes a special performance by Ghost Mom. "Daddy Issues" shows through the end of the month.
